- The vibrant energy of urban youth culture really inspires my creative process—from their love of bold colours, striking patterns to the unique ways in which they style themselves. I spend a lot of time scouring thrift stores and second-hand markets, searching for one-of-a-kind pieces of clothing and materials I can upcycle into something fresh and new. I also take inspiration from the natural beauty of South Africa, embracing earthy tones and textures in my designs.
- My community faces ongoing economic challenges. But these hurdles have actually fuelled my passion for sustainable fashion. Many young people in South Africa struggle to afford the latest, and trendiest clothes. I don’t see fast fashion being a sustainable, long-term solution though, in fact, it’s proven to be the second-highest polluting industry in the world. By recycling and upcycling second-hand materials, I’m able to provide affordable and unique fashion options to my community, and, at the same time, Re-Fashion reduces waste and treads lightly on the environment.
- The love of fashion and style among the young people in my community is truly inspiring. In the face of so many economic challenges, these trendsetters are always finding creative ways to express themselves through their clothing and tailor-made accessories. In fact, it’s their passion and creativity that has motivated me to create a brand that’s all about individuality and self-expression.
- Fast fashion is harmful, both to the environment and to the people working within the industry. It’s just not sustainable, nor ethical. I feel that recycling our clothing is the way forward for fashion in Africa. By repurposing second-hand materials, we can reduce waste and support sustainable production practices. I believe that by promoting a culture of recycling and upcycling, we can change people’s perception of fashion. In fact, it will set up a more sustainable future for the industry.
- Finding investors in the early stages of Re-Fashion was definitely tough, but I was able to connect with some amazing people through online fashion blogs and local South African industry contacts. They supported me from the get-go and really believed in my vision. Without that I would have never been able to turn my passion for sustainable fashion into the thriving business I have today. Not to blow my own horn, but, wow, Re-Fashion has had such a positive impact on the local community. For me, as a budding entrepreneur, that’s such a remarkable reward all on its own. I currently employ three seamstresses from my community, and I’m looking to expand in the future. This will me to support local businesses and promote sustainable job creation. One of the highlights for me is when I see someone strutting around in my stuff. And the response has been incredible! People of all ages just loving wearing these unique pieces. I am beyond grateful to be able to have the opportunity to do something I’m so passionate about every day.

Entrepreneurship
I am a serial entrepreneur and I have been vegetarian for 14 years now. In a nutshell, I start businesses, grow them and retain some ownership before decelerating from all the operational duties involved.
In addition, I am a complete lover of nature. I turned vegetarian at 18 years old. And my mother introduced me to hiking in my teenage years. So, I take random walks in the bushes every now and then. It definitely helps with decision-making in business, too. But it is not all that I am. I am also an aspiring father, husband and Vegan. Did I mention I am Christian?
